Volunteer Information for Current Veterinary Students
Learning through caring…
For Current DVM Students:
The Mercer Veterinary Clinic for the Homeless is held during the second Saturday of every month year-round from 8AM to 3-4 PM. UC Davis Veterinary students and pre-veterinary students over the age of 18 are welcome to volunteer for the clinic. Duties of student volunteers may include taking patient histories, performing physical examinations, administering preventative medications and vaccines, assisting with or performing minor procedures under supervision of a volunteer DVM, pulling patient charts and assisting in clean-up duties.
Veterinary students interested in volunteering for upcoming Mercer Clinics can get involved through the Mercer Clinic student club at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. At the yearly club fairs and TGIF events, incoming first year students can meet the current club government and learn how about how to join the student government of the clinic. Look for more information in your UC Davis email, in August shortly before the new year starts!
What to bring: Blue scrubs, nametag, close-toed shoes, stethoscope, penlight (if you have one), pen, and a watch. If you have a rectal thermometer you’re willing to use for your own patients, please bring that as well. A clipboard can be handy for holding files and writing out physical exam sheets, but is not required.
When to arrive: Due to recent policy changes, we will only have one shift from 8AM to 2PM. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your shift, as there will be a short orientation. If you need any time arrangements, please speak to one of the head coordinators or any of the officers.
Where to go: 1321 North C Street, Sacramento, CA 95811 (Note: This is not the exact address, but the nearest to the clinic location.)
Directions: Merge onto I-80 E toward Sacramento (9.1mi)
Continue on I-80 Business E (3.4mi)
Take the exit onto I-5 N toward Redding (2.2mi)
Take exit 520 for Richards Blvd (0.2mi)
Turn right at Richards Blvd (1.3mi)
Follow Richards Blvd until you come to a HUGE intersection right before you see some train tracks. Be in your right lane. You will turn right onto N 12th street (before the train tracks). Get into the far left lane (you will be crossing around 5 lanes to do this) before the next intersection. At the light, you will see Ahern St. up and to your left. Turn onto Ahern St. Turn right at the gates around 100 feet up. Park close to the building in the parking lot, or if no parking is available, you will be directed down the block to parking in front of some of the brick light industrial buildings. When arriving, the first gate is currently for foot traffic and clients only; the second gate is our entry for vehicles.
